Yan White is a London-based artist working with digital hybrid printmaking techniques, photography and process-based painting.
Influenced by Dharma Art, Zen and Mandalas he produces paintings primarily concerned with a process refined to a simple gesture, allowing gravity, slow evaporation of water, the mixing of elements (ink, paints, glue, oil, water, the paper itself) and a containing boundary to create the piece (‘Remnants of Water’). This can be considered a kind of nature painting. Weight and time play an important role in defining the outcome.
His printmaking uses a hybrid of digital (inkjet printing, software) and analog. This could involve printing on handmade paper, collage, or screen printing an image appropriated from an internet search and batch processed to a vector image. Some images are ‘sampled’ (to borrow a concept from hip hop) from vintage comics which are then processed, simplified and layered. Corrupted jpeg files are also rescued, collected and used as source material (‘The Night Trees’, ‘Harmony #1’).
Yan is fascinated by a visceral, sensual, cosmic nature, chance, alchemy, binary counterpoint, and developing a symbolic language. The use of gold and circles for example can be seen to represent transformation and the enlightened state. The work arises out of an unconscious and emotional impulse as well as conscious meditations on simplicity, patience and transformation.
Yan is also a musician. He works with Drumunity CIC, The Improvisers Choir and co-facilitates monthly sound journeys at Shiatsu-Do.
